What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average of your grade points for a single semester. It measures how well you performed in the courses you took during that semester, weighted by credit hours.

At Virtual University, GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of all your grade points across every semester of your degree. It represents your complete academic performance and is used for scholarships, graduate admissions, and job screening.

GPA vs CGPA — What's the Difference?

  • GPA: Single semester performance
  • CGPA: Overall performance across all semesters

Your GPA changes every semester, while CGPA is the cumulative running average from your first semester to your last.

Tips to Improve Your GPA & CGPA

  1. Focus on high-credit courses — 3-credit courses affect your GPA more
  2. Never skip assignments — Free marks that lift your grade
  3. Take GDBs seriously — Easy marks that help your GPA
  4. Prepare well for exams — Exams carry the highest weight
  5. Retake failed courses — Improving an F to a C boosts CGPA significantly
  6. Balance your course load — Avoid too many difficult courses together

Important Reminder

VU requires a minimum CGPA of 2.0 for graduation. Falling below this leads to academic probation. Always track your CGPA each semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which calculator should I use?

Use the GPA tab if you want to calculate your GPA for a single semester using course-wise grades. Use the CGPA tab if you already know your semester GPAs and credit hours.

What is a good GPA at VU?

A GPA of 3.0 or above is considered good. 3.5+ is excellent. Below 2.0 is at-risk. The same scale applies to CGPA.

Can I calculate CGPA without knowing individual course grades?

Yes! Use the CGPA tab — you only need your semester GPA and credit hours. No need for individual course grades.

How many semesters can I add in the CGPA calculator?

Unlimited. Add as many semesters as you want — 2, 4, 6, 8, or more.

Is this calculator accurate for VU?

Yes. It uses the exact same formula VU uses: GPA = Quality Points ÷ Credit Hours, and CGPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours.
